Remember: Personal organization is the key to organization of the mind. -Help your child become organized by following classroom organizational rules such as.. 1. We use a "left/right" system in first grade. This really helps the students stay organized as well as learn their left from their right. All folders are labeled 'left' and 'right'. In their HOMEWORK folder, the left side is reserved for homework assignments - the right side is reserved for COMPLETED homework assignments. If their completed homework is always on the right side, students will easily find and turn in Homework ON THEIR OWN!
2. The students' TAKE-HOME FOLDER (their ICS white folder) is also set up with a left and a right side. The left side is your child's continuing work - it should NOT BE REMOVED! The right side is to be emptied and reviewed DAILY. (Even on Friday night!) It is also where notes, money, etc. should be placed so your child can turn it in. Again, if notes are consistently placed onthe right side, your child will learn to consistently look there and turn it in! (PLEASE REMEMBER TO PLACE ALL MONEY IN AN ENVELOP LABELED WITH YOUR NAME AND THE PURPOSE OF THE MONEY!)
3. Hi-frequency words (Sight words) are words your child should readily recognize ... even if he/she can't spell them. When writing them for homework, remember they always go on COLORED INDEX CARDS!
4. When we begin spelling tests, the SPELLING WORDS are words your child should be ableto read AND spell. When writing them for homework, remember they always go on WHITE INDEX CARDS. These cards STAY AT HOME! Please do not send them into the classroom. ***Cards can be stored in index card boxes (available at any office supply store or Walmart) or on large rings. Keep the two sets of cards separate so that your child isn't trying to spell words he/she only has to read and visa-versa!
