Message from the School Nurse

Health alert from the nurse:  A child in the 4 y/o PM class was just diagnosed with chickenpox. Although children are required to be immunized for chickenpox before entry into school, it is not unusual for mild cases to occur in vaccinated children. A second dose of vaccine is now being given for that reason.  Symptoms of chickenpox include slight fever and skin rash consisting of fluid-filled bumps (vesicles) for 3-4 days, which turn into crusts or scabs which last about 14 days; however, children who are vaccinated tend toward very mild cases of 40 or less pox that resolve more quickly. It is spread person-to person by respiratory droplets or by direct contact with fresh nose and throat secretions or fluid from the vesicles, and is contagious from 1-2 days before onset of rash until all lesions are crusted. Children cannot return to school until all lesions are crusted. If your child is diagnosed with chickenpox, please contact the school nurse. Pregnant women who have not had chickenpox or the vaccine should consult their physicians. Also consult a physician for newborns or persons with weakened immune systems who have been exposed.

RE: RACE FOR EDUCATION "VOLUNTEERS"

You have already received information regarding our first Race for Education at ICS, which will be held Friday, May 16th, 2008. Our goal is to raise $20,000 in order to advance the science department in out school. Many volunteers are needed to help us achieve our goal. We are writing specifically to recruit volunteers who will be able to help ICS with the "record keeping process" as monies start coming in from our donors.

We are seeking volunteers to work at the school starting on Monday, April 14, 2008 and continuing through the end of May. Work days will be on Mondays, Wednesdays from 8:15a.m.to 2:30p.m. and Fridays from 12:30p.m to 2:30p.m. If you would be willing to help us for one, two or three-hour segment on any of those days, it would be greatly appreciated.

If you are willing to serve as a "record keeping volunteer" for this year's Race for Education, please fill out the form below and return it to the school office by Friday, April 11th. We will be contacting the volunteers to find out which specific dates you are available. Thanks you in advance for your help!

Want to get more involved in your school?  Would you like to help make decisions that directly impact ICS?  Want to vote on social events, ways to promote communication, help direct  fundraised monies…..

                   THEN COME JOIN THE HSA!

We are currently looking for members for next year.  Here are the descriptions of each position.  All positions are a two year term!

President Elect is the understudy for the President.  This person assists the president and learns the ropes by helping at various HSA events.  After learning the ropes, this person becomes the President the following year.

Treasurer Elect is the understudy for the position of Treasurer.  This person aids the Treasurer and makes all deposits.  The following year, this person becomes the Treasurer.

Recording secretary records the minutes at each meeting, transcribes them and emails them to all board members before each monthly meeting.

Members at Large are the Board liaisons to the Committee heads and could head “special” HSA projects.  There are currently two positions needing to be filled!  One Member at Large will chair the Hospitality Committee and the other will chair the Decorating Committee.

All Board members attend a meeting over the summer in which they discuss the upcoming year’s calendar of events and decide which events they would like to help with.  After that, members attend one meeting each month to discuss any topics that need to be addressed and to vote on items before the board.

If you would like to run for any of these positions, please email your name, position you’re interested in and the best way to contact you to Katie Oliver at Daroli@comcast.net or Stacey Scheper at rascheper@comcast.net.  Please put “nominating ballot” in the subject line.  Please feel free to nominate anyone you think would be good on the Board.

Please consider using your talents and time by becoming a member of the HSA.  Help make ICS a wonderful and fulfilling place for our children to learn and grow!

There is still time to get tickets for the ICS Gala. . . Please contact Caroline Wescott (410-561-2221)

Illness is definitely on the increase at school.  If your children complain about not feeling well in the morning, please take their temperature and consider keeping them home, whether or not they have a fever, especially if they don’t generally complain. Please do not give children pills or medicine (prescription or non-prescription) for self-medication during the day. All medications must be given by the school nurse and must be accompanied by a physician’s order to be given in school.  If you would like your child to receive cough drops during the day, please send some to the nurse’s office in a small bag labeled with your child’s name along with a note giving your permission.  Thank you for your cooperation.
